A report concluded that development of golf course in Xaghra l-¨¤amra concluded that substantial urban development is required to offset the costs leading to return rate of 15.5%.

A report concluded that development of a golf course in Xaghra l-¨¤amra, Mellieha is unsustainable. The golf course would require to be flanked by substantial urban development to offset the costs leading, yielding a return rate of 15.5%.

Speaking during a press conference on Saturday, Prime Minister Dr. Lawrence Gonzi announced that after analyzing the report, the government came to the decision to develop a national park in the area instead, along with the collaboration of Din l-Art ¨¤elwa and Nature Trust Malta.

An initial agreement between the three parties has already been signed.

Dr. Gonzi explained that flanking the golf course with further development went against the government¡¯s original plan for the area, since it wanted to keep the required real estate development to a bare minimum.

Outlining the plans for the national park, the Prime Minister said it would be a large as 370 football grounds, stretching across the area between G©¤ajn Tuffie©¤a Bay and Anchor Bay.

The decision to replace the development of the golf course with a national park was well received by Din l-Art ¨¤elwa and Nature Trust Malta representatives Martin Galea and Vince Attard.

Plans to develop a golf course were being laid down in a bid to attract further tourists to Malta, since golf could play a key role in redefining Malta¡¯s tourism product.
