The Unjoni Ħaddiema Magħqudin (UĦM) has
ordered a total strike at Maltapost for Friday. The union said the strike is
being held after the company’s management failed yet to present new proposals
for the employees’ collective agreement. Further industrial actions are also
expected to ensue on Saturday.
Postal operators have also been called on
to gather in front of Maltapost’s Head Office in Marsa on Friday, where they will be
addressed by the union’s officials.
In a meeting between UĦM’s Director for
Industrial Relations and Employment Dr Noel Vella and the company’s management
on Thursday set of proposals for the collective agreement were presented,
however these were deemed unacceptable by the union.
Last Thursday, the union registered an industrial dispute with the company.
Earlier on last week,
Maltapost objected to other industrial actions ordered by
the union to postal operators in hubs , whereby door-to-door addressed and
unaddressed post was not to processed.
The union said that the actions were initiated to safeguard the health of
operators who are being asked to carry heavy material during the course of
their work. However, Maltapost rebuffed the claim, pointing out that a
system of distribution boxes was introduced so that the health of its employees
would not be compromised.
