The Police and members from the Civil Protection Department are searching for five persons reported missing who are still stuck in the debris left following a series of explosions at the St Helen’s fireworks factory.

The explosions occurred at around 17:45CEST on Wednesday at the fireworks factory situated in the limits of Xwieki in Gharghur.

Preliminary investigations revealed that six persons were working at the fireworks factory.

One of the men was rushed to St Luke’s Hospital where he was certified to have sustained several burns. However, his condition is stable. The other five persons are still missing.

The Armed Forces of Malta were also called on site to help control the situation.

The blasts were felt from various parts of Malta including San Gwann, Naxxar and Mosta.

Duty Magistrate Silvio Meli was informed of the case and several experts were appointed to assist in the inquiry.

The same fireworks factory had exploded 26 years ago in 1982. A man had died in the incident.
