On Saturday, the government, the Pharmacists' Chamber and the General Retailers and Traders' Union (GRTU) signed the Pharmacy of Your Choice (POYC) agreement.

The scheme which will be launched in the upcoming days is expected to allow 140,000 entitled persons to collect free medicines for the pharmacy of their choice. The aim is to reduce the number of persons queuing for such medicines at Health Centers and St Luke’s hospital.

In order to implement the new scheme, a committee represented by the Ministry of Health and Finance together with the Pharmacists' Chamber and the GRTU, will be set up to devise a strategic plan.

The system will be introduced through a pilot project in the coming weeks in Mosta. Patients who usually obtain their free medicines from the Mosta Health Centre will be informed about the scheme and asked to register their pharmacy of their choice.

After evaluating the pilot project, the scheme will gradually be implemented throughout Malta and Gozo.
