The Enemalta office in Qawra has been equipped
with solar panel system to make its electricity generation self-sufficient. The
system was installed in the light of Enemalta’s initiative in favour of
alternative energy. At an investment of Lm7,000 (€16,306), the Qawra office is
the second to be equipped with such a system, following the installation of
solar panels in the company’s Sliema office.
Speaking during the launch, Enemalta
Chairman Ing. Alex Tranter also announced that in the coming weeks it will
start operating a wind power installation in Marfa.
Referring to the new solar panel system in
Qawra, consisting of 20 photo-voltaic panels, Ing. Tranter that it will supply
the Qawra office with 7,000 kilowatt hours of electricity per year, 2,000 more
than the system in Sliema generates. The system in Sliema was launched in
February.
The Chairman also explained that the panels
generate the most energy between the months of May and June and September and
October, when temperatures aren’t as high as they are at present.
Alex Tranter added that the system will help to curb C02 emissions and leave a
positive impact on the environment. It is estimated that between them the
systems at Qawra and Sliema will reduce CO2 emissions by 10,000kg.
The installation is intended to further demonstrate theapplication of photo-voltaic technology in Malta and encourage the use of renewable energy sources. The installation is alsobeing used to collect data on the performance of the system in varying ambient conditions so as to disseminaterealistic information to the public.
