The government has plans to celebrate Malta’s adoption of the euro in style on New Year’s Eve. The event, approved last week, will be held at the bus terminus outside City Gate and the surrounding grounds will be the site of the countdown clock,
The Sunday Times reported. There will be more entertainment within the city.
Meanwhile, Eurozone members (namely Belgium, Germany, Greece, Spain, France, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Austria, Portugal, Slovenia, Finland and Cyprus, which joins on January 1 with Malta) will be asked to take over areas in and around the city to provide their own traditional entertainment.
The government is hoping to attract private funding for the entertainment in these showcase sites in the form of corporate sponsors, which have connections with these countries.
The Sunday Times reported that the Maltese authorities will only be directly responsible for the countdown area, where celebrations will go on till 0100 CET. The whole event will be overseen by a coordinating body, which will supervise the artistic direction as well as safety and other logistical issues.
Besides the catering establishments inside Valletta, special concessions for catering may be issued for certain areas exclusively for the night to generate revenue and simultaneously provide more covers.
On January 12, a formal celebration will be organised for heads of state of all the Eurozone, their finance ministers and central bank chiefs, along with top Brussels functionaries, like the European Central Bank chief,
The Sunday Times said.
