The Maltese language mourns the death of Mario Serracino Inglott, vice-president of the Akkademja tal-Malti who passed away on Saturday evening. The National Book Council paid tribute to Mario Serracino Inglott.

Mario, the son of another prominent figure in the history of Maltese language, Erin, loved the Maltese language and worked all his life to see it in a better position. Among his large output, he continuted his father’s work on Il-Miklem Malti and also compiled his own dictionary and thesaurus, Dizzjunarju Malti.

For a number of years he was also a teacher of Maltese. For him Maltese was “a great and beautiful language that is second to no other language and that first and foremost makes us what we are – Maltese.”

Like his father he also loved chess and also wrote the history of chess in Malta. He had already won his first honour when he was just ten years old.

He was Vice-President of the Akkademja tal-Malti and also played his part to better Maltese in broadcasting.

The National Book Council honoured this man whose dedication towards Maltese lexicographically strengthened the language. While sending its condolences to his relatives, the Council paid tribute to a great friend of our language who left in book form the great work he did in his lifetime to strengthen it.
