Numerous trees were planted on Saturday during a tree-planting weekend organized at the Foresta 2000 site next to the Red Tower in Mellieha. The activity, which continues throughout Sunday, is being held in collaboration with BirdLife Malta, Din l-Art Helwa and the Ministry for Rural Affairs and the Environment.
The weekend is the result of the multitude of donations that poured in following the Foresta 2000 appeal launched earlier this year to re-plant the 3,000 trees which were damaged and destroyed in May 2007 by vandals at BirdLife Malta's Foresta 2000 site.
A press conference called on the FORESTA 2000 site the following day called on the authorities to bring the criminals to justice. They are still at large.
President Eddie Fenech Adami and Lawrence Gonzi attended the Tree Planting activity on Saturday.
Various activities for the whole family are being held during the weekend.
Tours have been organised to the Ghadira Nature Reserve and the EU LIFE Yelkouan Shearwater Project site at l-Ahrax tal-Mellieha.
Meanwhile, some 500 children from the Agenda Kids Club will be planting their own tree at the Foresta 2000 site. In all, the Agenda Kids Club will be contributing over 3,000 trees for a children-friendly area incorporated as part of the afforestation project currently underway at the site.
