The renovated Hal Far detention centre was inaugurated by Vice Prime Minister Tonio Borg on Friday. Lm50,000 (€116,468) were allocated to the centre thanks to the ERF II 2006 fund handed down to the Maltese government by the European Union.
Works were carried out by the trades section of the Police Corps.
The EU also allocated Lm218,155 (€508,246) for the construction of a new detention centre in Kandja.
Just this week, a report by AFP described how illegal immigrants in Malta, who came to Malta by accident after looking for a better future in Europe, are living in 'inhuman conditions' according to one of the harshest immigration policies in the European Union.
The French news agency also produced photos of the living conditions at the Marsa Open Centre and the tents in the Hal Far Open Centre for illegal immigrants. Read more here.
