An earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale struck Greece on Sunday. Consequently, a slight tremor was also felt in various parts of Malta such as Valletta, San Gwann, Floriana, Ta' Xbiex, Sliema, Rabat (Malta), and Paola.
The tremor in Malta which lasted for a few seconds occurred at around 06:15CET. No damages were reported.
Peter Cordina, director of the Civil Protection Department said that several people called to enquire about the tremor. The department also contacted the Italian Civil Protection authorities for further information.
The earthquake shook people in Greece out of bed sending panic-stricken villagers into the streets but there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage. Greek media said they had received calls from people who felt the quake in several towns, mainly in the south and on Aegean Sea islands.
The U.S. Geological Survey said on its website that the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.1. Seismologists said the quake was about 80 km (50 miles) deep and that explained why it had not caused serious damage.
