Former Gzira Mayor Albert Rizzo passed away on Thursday night at the age of 60.

Mr Rizzo held a world record for threading water for 108 hours and 9 minutes and was a PN candidate for the March 8 general election.

Mr Rizzo was also a leading auctioneer and antique dealer by profession.  In his youth he was a well-known sportsman in Malta and was voted Sportsman of the Year in 1980. He inherited his swimming prowess from his legendary grandfather and his water-treading exploits were unique. He was in fact the first Maltese to be mentioned in the Guinness Book of Records for his unusual feats.

His involvement in Local Councils was marked by his election in 1994 as Mayor of his home town, Gzira.
