The Ministry of Education has condemned any type of violence and that it will tolerate no acts of violence in schools. This was stated in a statement published on Friday.
Earlier on Friday the Malta Union of Teachers published a statement saying that there has been a rise in violence and abuse against teachers in the last weeks.
MUT mentions various cases including an alleged attack on a member of the academic staff in Naxxar who after being assaulted had to receive treatment at a Health Centre.
In its statement, the ministry also revealed that for the past few weeks it has been working with the Naxxar secondary school to address tensions that have been created there. It said that it has chosen a process whereby school staff and students alike are being involved in the creation of an action plan to move towards a serene environment within the school.
The ministry also said that the commissioner of police has been informed about Thursday’s case of alleged assault on a teacher and steps will be taken against the person who is allegedly responsible for this act.
The statement emphasized the fact that none of the parties involved in this case are students.
Finally, the MUT has threatened that if the government is not going to address this problem with full force it will have to take charge of it and will use any means at its disposition.
