Major traffic chaos and congestions has hit the main arteries around Manoel Dimech bridge on Monday morning prior to its official opening.
Frustrated motorists told MaltaMedia.com that relatively short trips to work which usually last some ten minutes, were delayed by up to an hour.
The Manoel Dimech Bridge has been undergoing major maintenance works for over eighteen months and has cost around €6 million. Moreover, work delays have sparked controversy leading to the Roads Ministry to demand a detailed report on the delayed execution of the project from the Malta Transport Authority (ADT). The authority was also instructed to safeguard its legal position with regard to the contractor.
In view of the bridge’s opening scheduled for 1500CET,the Transport Authority closed Triq Mikielanġ Borġ (road leading from Spinola Bay to Manwel Dimech Bridge southbound tunnel) to vehicular traffic between Sunday at 0300 CEST and Monday 1500CET.
Moreover, vehicular traffic from Kappara Junction (Roundabout tat-Tank tal-Gass) is being diverted to Triq tas-Sliema in the direction towards San Ġwann and in the direction towards Gżira.
The Ministry for Communications and National Projects was not available for comment on Monday morning.
