The bubbly Italian comedian, director and screenwriter Roberto Benigni was on Tuesday afternoon conferred with the honorary degree of Doctor of Literature by the University of Malta.

Benigni sprinkled his acceptance speech with Maltese words saying he was amazed at being honoured with the degree.

The doctorate honoris causa was given to Benigni in recognition both for his work in the field of cinema and for his significant contribution to Dante scholarship, to the study of literature and to the humanities in general.

The event came to a close with a wonderful lecture about Dante by Benigni himself.
