All across the world, many countries are today celebrating motherhood and are showing appreciation for the work carried out by mothers in the family and community by giving symbolic gifts such as flowers.
The historical origin of the feast is still unknown but a dominant theory states that it dates back to an ancient Greek custom of mother worship. In the Roman Empire, mothers were given gifts and honoured during Matronalia, a feast dedicated to Juno.
In Malta, mother’s day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May, just like in most Western countries but other countries celebrate it on different dates according to national and local customs.
