National juries have selected the winner for each participating country of the European Young Journalist Award. The competition aimed at encouraging young Europeans to reflect and share their views on the European Union's enlargement policy and to showcase their talent as writers.

In Malta, the national winner is James Pace with his article „A bigger pie with more flavours“. The article will be published in Malta Today and within The Insiter.

With a total number of 400 participants, the European Young Journalist Award “Enlarge your vision” has now concluded in all of its 35 participating countries. In its first year, this pan-European competition received a large number of entries dealing with topics such as benefits and challenges of EU enlargement, perspectives of the future member states, European values and European integration.

Pace’s article convinced the jury by the jury member Mr. Naudi who commented, “An interesting take on a culinary premise. Accurately sums up how the EU has developed and where it is heading“. Victor Vella also commented “I have judged the articles on research, structure of the article, the balance AND readability. In my judgement, the article by Jamie Pace scored most on readability and the balance of how he treated the subject.  It was a researched article, which make it a good article to read”.

The national jury, consisting of Karl Schembri, Malcolm J. Naudi, Victor Vella and Edward Demicoli, decided on the national winner according to the relevance of information in relation to the topic, originality of treatment of the subject, journalistic style and quality of writing, ability to catch the reader’s attention and effort made in the preparation of the article. A criterion was also how the author was dealing with EU enlargement, being the topic of the competition.

In the winners’ trip, taking place from June 29th to July 3rd, the 35 national winners will travel together from Belgrade via Zagreb to Ljubljana. During the trip they will get to know the countries, meet representatives from politics, media, universities and civil society to discuss various enlargement issues.

In addition to the experience of the journey, the aspiring journalists will participate in a closing conference with media and politics representatives from various countries and also the mentors of the national juries. In the final conference, the same issues that have also been dealt with in the articles will be discussed.

The European Young Journalist was organised jointly by the European Commission, Directorate-General for Enlargement and the European Youth Press.
