On Friday 16th May around 225 people, many of whom were young people who will do voluntary work in Malta or abroad throughout 2008 were invited to a meeting with Archbisop Paul Cremona in an activity coordinated by SPYS (Salesian Pastoral Youth Service) and ĊAM Youths and commissioned by the Diocesan Youth Commission (KDŻ) at the University Chaplaincy.
The activity, having the World Youth Day 2008 theme of “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses...” (Acts 1:8) was animated with presentations, references to the Bible, mime by young people from De La Salle College as well as music by Christian band Footprints and Fr Karm Debattista MSSP, all in order to bless the start of this voluntary work experience for the volunteers present.
In his address to those present, Archbishop Paul Cremona mentioned the fact that voluntary work is a perfect example of where the Holy Spirit can be found as well as an internal voyage as a step to mission. He thus insisted on the importance that needs to be given by young people to look for such opportunities. Referring to the Samaritan in the Gospel, the Archbishop spoke about the need to look and give importance at each and every individual that we meet along this voyage as they all are important. Here, he added that whenever thousands of people die in tragic disasters, thousands of characters, with experience and unique stories of particular meaning to each are lost.
With reference to the mime by the De La Salle College students which portrayed the reality of sin against the reality of choosing Christ in one’s lie, he said that God’s love is one that loves everyone infinitely in the same way.
Before starting an informal reception with those present, Archbishop Cremona presented each and every organization and volunteer with a knapsack symbolising the internal voyage the volunteers will be doing on their way towards others.
The next, similar appointment with the volunteers will be on the 12th September whereby another meeting will be held to welcome back the volunteers.
