A number of enforcement measures were carried out against various catering establishments in the Sliema Ferries' area on Friday morning. The actions were carried out in conjunction between the Malta Tourism Authority, representatives of the Lands' department and the Police force.

The actions addressed establishements which had broken rules and regulations related to public hindrances, obstacles and pedestrian access. Many complaints had been registered from a large number of individuals as well as from the Sliema Local Council with regards to rampant abuses in this regard.

MTA officials were on site to ensure that the establishments concerned come into line with the relevant legislation regulating outdoor tables and chairs and pedestrian access, whereas Lands department officials were at hand to remove obstacles to the public, where necessary.

Over a fortnight ago, the owners of the establishments concerned were informed that they had two weeks in which to regularize their position and conform to the relevant regulations, otherwise appropriate remedial action would be taken.

Similar steps are planned to be taken in other areas around Malta and Gozo, where applicable, in an effort to ensure conformity to the relevant regulations.
