The surcharge on electricity and water has been raised to 95% from its current 50%, government announced. The revised surcharge rate is effective as from Tuesday.

The revision comes as a direct effect of the rise in oil prices on the international markets and according to minister Austin Gatt it should be at 115%.  Government is however subsidising the 20% difference between the old and the revised rate.

A new system of tariffs is expected to be implemented in October or November.
