The next Outstanding Young Person of the World could be Maltese as three local researchers are amongst the 30 nominees shortlisted from all over the world for the prestigious award of Outstanding Young Person of the World for 2008 organized by the Junior Chamber International.

These are Marco Cremona, Alan Deidun and Kleda Mulaj. Notably Cremona and Deidun are environmental activists who have been consistently committed to issues of sustainability and the environment for most of their adult life.

Asked by MaltaMedia about how it feels to be shortlisted for such a prestigious international prize, Cremona said that he is delighted at having made it to the final shortlist, especially since he had given up hope on his nomination being considered by the international panel of judges. This in view of the fact that his nomination did not win the national award, which award went to Minister Tonio Fenech.

"Making it to the shortlist is a great achievement in itself, and it boosts my motivation to continue working for the safeguarding of our water resources and the environment in general, also through the development of new sustainable solutions as I have done to date", he said.

Marco Cremona won the JCI national award in the Environment and/or Moral Responsibility catagory in 2006, and the national award in the Scientific and/or Technological Development catagory in 2007 - making him the only person to win the award twice, and in different catagories.

Marco's latest project is the development of a commercial process for the production of potable water from sewage. Tests for the project are current underway at a hotel in the north of Malta.

Meanwhile, Alternattiva Demokratika - The Green Party has congratulated the three young Maltese and Malta based researchers, for their nomination.

Arnold Cassola, Alternattiva Demokratika Chairperson, stated: "To have three Maltese shortlisted from amongst the thousands of persons nominated from all over the world is an honour for  Malta.  What a pity that despite the fact that the work of Marco and Alan has been recognised internationally, the Maltese government has not made use of their services and expertise. These are just two of the hundreds of competent Maltese citizens whose expertise is continuously put aside by the Maltese Government. It is about time that in selecting appointees to public bodies Government ensures that its appointments are based on competence and not on political loyalty to the Party in government."
