The National Council for the Maltese Language has issued a new set of orthographic rules for the Maltese language  on Friday.

The new rules will, among other decisions, outlaw words like ‘subjien’, 'Islam' 'ruxmata' and ‘skond’ in favour of the more phonetically constant ‘subien’, ‘Izlam ’, ‘ruxxmata’, and ‘skont’.

The old rules will remain valid until 25 July 2011, after which only the new rules will be considered correct. This will reduce the impact on students sitting for their Junior Lyceum, O level, I level or A level exams in the Maltese language.

The new rules can be viewed here.
