The leader of the Malta Labour Party, Joseph Muscat, has said that his party’s vision is to have productive workers and not retired ones.
This was said in a meeting with a delegation from the General Workers Union on Thursday afternoon during which the situation of the Dockyards’ workers was discussed.
Muscat said that the MLP does not want to see workers getting paid to stay at home but wants workers to contribute in the job market and in the creation of wealth in Malta. He also said that it is understood that Government has already had informal talks with three private companies even if a call for tenders has not been published yet. The MLP leader said that even at this stage of informal discussions, the GWU should have been involved for consultation.
As to the early retirement schemes, Muscat reiterated that these should be truly voluntary and that workers should still have the chance to work at the Dockyards. Until now, the workers have, however, only two choices, either to retire or to “not know what is going to happen to them”, Muscat said.
