On Monday, a nurse having lunch at the new hospital’s canteen found the head of a mouse in her plate, it was revealed in a statement from the office of the parliamentary secretary for health.

The management said it initiated an investigation into the case after verifying the report. The vegetables in which the mouse’s head was found had been imported from Belgium after being packed in Holland.

The Maltese inspectorate for Public Health has informed the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed so that it may take action and be able to collect the batch from which the vegetables originated.

The Maltese Inspectorate has also contacted the supplier and sealed the remaining products from the same batch of vegetables. It will also take legal action against the person responsible as is provided by law.

The contractors of the canteen said that the vegetables served in the meals were imported frozen vegetables packed in the Netherlands and imported from Belgium.

The contractor claimed it has taken immediate action, destroyed all the stock coming from the particular supplier, has terminated all ties with the supplier and is seeking legal advice as to what action it will take against him.

Local health inspectors who incidentally were making an inspection at the canteen on the same day of the incident have found the canteen and kitchen to be up to scratch and upholding all the HACCP catering standards required by EU legislation, and passing all quality control.

The contractor is completely confident that the incident did not arise in-house and the media has been invited to visit the kitchen facilities at any time.
