For the past 105 years St. Patrick’s Salesian School has been offering residential placements for boys aged 9-16.

The organisation run by Salesians aims to care for children and youths who face adversity and may be at the risk of social exclusion.  It also aims to develop its services in order to be able to meet new emergent needs and challenges in this field.  For example, at present St. Patrick’s is actively involved in meeting the challenge of replacing institutional care with a model favouring community based group care.

In line with this vision the first group home, Don Bosco House, will be opening in the very near future.  Alongside these developments, in the recent years, St. Patrick’s has invested in meeting the psycho-emotional needs of children who live in out-of-home care through therapeutic interventions.  Such interventions are delivered through a multidisciplinary team and are also extended to the boys’ families.

In line with these developments, a three day conference exploring therapeutic interventions with children is being organized in collaboration with the office of the Child Commissioner.  The event will be held from Thursday 12th till Saturday 14th March 2009 at Hilton Malta International, St. Julian’s.  It will also include a pre-conference workshop on how to best help looked after children in their learning.

Conference will include the participation of exponents from foreign organizations and experts in the field alongside contributions from local professionals, agencies and other bodies.  Out of home care includes foster care, residential care, therapeutic residential care and other forms.

The overall aim of the conference will be to enable conference participants to engage with the dilemmas and challenges that out of home care poses for children and their families within the local context.  It is our aspiration that the conference gives voice to the issues that the children and their families have to face: issues that are brought to the foreground in the therapeutic encounters.

Conference is open to social workers, care workers, foster carers, educators, therapists, psychologists, academics, students and international participants.  For further information please send an email to stpsupportservices@gmail.com.
