Unemployment falls by 469 persons in August

At 6,121 persons, registered unemployment in August 2008 decreased by 469 persons when compared to the same month last year, according to figures published by the National Statistics Office on Thursday.
In August 2008, the number of registered unemployed stood at 6,121. Compared to the corresponding month a year ago, the overall number of unemployed fell by 469 persons.
In Malta, the registered unemployed amounted to 5,425 persons, whereas in Gozo the registered unemployed amounted to 696.
In the twelve months to August 2008, Malta experienced a decline in unemployment, whereas Gozo has seen a rise on this count (-530 in Malta and 61 in Gozo). The overall increase in the number of registered unemployed in Gozo was the result of an increase of 60 men and 1 women on the unemployment register.
When it comes to Malta, the overall decrease in the number of
registered unemployed was the result of a decrease of 342 men and 188 women on the unemployment register. In Gozo, the biggest increase in the number of registered unemployed occurred in the segment of those persons aged 45 years and over (+45 persons). In Malta, the same segment reported a decrease of 32 persons on the unemployment register.
In the twelve months to August 2008, all the age groups showed a
decline in the number of registered unemployed, with the exception of the category of persons aged 45 years and over. Accordingly, a decrease of 142 persons occurred in the segment of those aged under 20, a decrease of 215 occurred in the segment of those aged 20-24, a decrease of 59 persons occurred in the segment of those aged 25-29, a decrease of 66 persons occurred in the segment of those aged 30-44, and an increase of 13 persons occurred in the segment of those aged 45 and over.
Between August 2007 and August 2008, the duration of unemployment spells decreased across all the periods.
This release also provides information on the occupations being sought by the unemployed.
Among men, occupations related to elementary duties and plant and machine operations were the most common, whereas women tended to seek jobs which were clerical or service oriented.
The unemployment rates for August 2008 do not feature in this release since the data on the labour supply for this month are not yet available.
In April 2008, the registered unemployment rate stood at 4.1% of the labour supply.
On a gender basis, the unemployment rate for men stood at 4.5, whilst the unemployment rate for women stood at 3.0%.
The long-term unemployment rate, referring to people who have been registering for work for more than twelve months, stood at 1.5%.
The unemployment rate among older workers (45 years of age and over) was 4.1% while the unemployment rate among young people (under 25 years of age) stood at 5.5%.
