The five fireworks explosion victims were finally laid to rest on Saturday morning.
Thirty-three-year-old Sunny Borg, 68-year-old Vincent Galea, 24-year-old Richard Cardona,
22-year-old Carmel Farrugia and 47-year-old Paul Bonnici lost their lives on June 27 at the factory in the
limits of Xwieki
in Gharghur.
The five coffins left St Luke's Hospital at 0730CEST in a cortege to
Birkirkara. Bands accompanied the cortege to St Helen's basilica where the
funeral Mass started at 0900CEST.
Mr Farrugia's coffin left for a separate service at the basilica
of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Valletta,
where the funeral Mass started at 1000CEST.
DNA tests were neccessary prior to burial since
only Mr Sunny Borg's corpse could be identified following the tragedy.
Joe
Bonello from Qormi is the lone survivor of incident. He was released
from hospital five days after being hospitalised for injuries
sustained to his head, right arm and left
shoulder during the explosion.
The fireworks that the five men were working on
were to be used
during Birkirkara’s St Helen’s feast to be held in August. As a sign of solidarity, towards the victims' families, Birkirkara’s St. Helen external festivities have been
cancelled.
The parish office said that the feast of St Helen has been
narrowed down to four days and all outdoor festivities have been cancelled. The liturgical feast in honour of St. Helen
will still be celebrated inside the Parish Church of St Helen.
