The new Gozo harbour terminal was inaugurated by Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi on Thursday morning.
Passengers can now embark and disembark from the ferries separately from the cars. The project cost €9.3 million and can now cater for 600 passengers and 200 cars at a time. The Mgarr terminal includes a cafeteria, luggage handling facilities and a 180 slot underground car park, as well as a new marshalling area.
Investment and IT Minister Austin Gatt, said the terminal increases convenience for passengers and said that there has already been a registered 11% increase in traffic in the first weeks of 2008 when compared with the same period in 2007.
Works had started on the quays and terminal in 2001 and the project has been the subject of political controversy and criticism up to a few days ago when Opposition and Malta Labour Party Leader brought it up again in a press conference on Feb 8th.
On that day Dr Sant had pointed out that the Gozo Ferry Terminal project is another one which has not been completed because the Nationalist Government has not yet managed to get the required funds from the EU.
