KSU disapprove of UMASA, MUT directive

Kunsill Studenti Universitarji (KSU) sid in a press statement that it disapproves of a directive issued by the University of Malta Academic Staff Association and the Malta Union of Teachers. The directive calls on staff not to publish examination results until further notice.

The two unions have declared a trade dispute over the University's failure to make satisfactory progress in the negotiation of a new collective agreement for academic staff.

KSU said that the measures called for by these two associations are inappropriate as they cause unnecessary distress to the student body especially in view of the fact that the examination period has not yet ended.

Moreover, this action could result in a breach of the Students’ Rights Charter, KSU stated.

KSU is of the firm opinion that the grades of students must not be used as leverage in the dispute. Students should be entitled to receive their results in due time.

KSU called on representatives of both parties to engage in discussions to reach an agreement with consideration shown towards all students, without any distinction. It also condemned the manner in which the two associations proceeded with this directive without any contact with the Student Council to beable to inform students accordingly.

"KSU would like to point out that apart from the marks being necessary to assess whether astudent will be able to pursue his course of studies or not, it can also negatively effect student employment in view of the summer months ahead, and the eligibility of students to apply to other specialized courses. A delay in publication of results will also lead to students missing out on opportunities to attend summer universities abroad or apply for scholarships or University courses abroad." KSU concluded.
