All is set for Thursday evening's 2007 Eurovision Song Contest semifinal in Helsinki, Finland. Following the final dress rehearsal, which ended at about 1600 CEST, Olivia Lewis and the Maltese team seemed confident that Malta's fate now rests with the Eurovision voting public.

olivia lewis in rehearsal To anyone who knows her personally, Olivia is clearly aware of people's expectations in Malta. She performed gracefully during the final dress rehearsal and the show during the public event on Thursday evening should make her fans proud. The supporting performers are providing a spectacular environment  for the singer, the likes of which have never been seen in a Maltese Eurovision entry.

The pressure on Malta to qualify from the semifinal is an unwarranted hurdle for the 2007 Eurovision entry. The semifinal system was introduced in 2004. Malta has to take part in the semifinal this year because of last year's dismal result by Fabrizio Faniello. Having already experienced the semifinal process with Julie & Ludwig's On Again...Off Again 2004, song-writing duo Gerard James Borg and Philip Vella are well equipped to handle the pressure.

Speaking exclusively to MaltaMedia, composer Philip Vella said that the Maltese team is focusing on making the top 10 on Thursday evening. "Any better placing after that is a bonus," he added.

This feeling is echoed by the various family members and close friends of Olivia Lewis who have arrived in Helsinki on Tuesday evening. Many of them, including Olivia's parents, are visibly excited but realistic in their expectations for the Maltese entry.

The 2007 Eurovision Song Contest semifinal starts at 2100 CEST. Malta's song is expected on stage sometime after 2200 CEST. Eurovision fans in all 42 countries participating in this year's edition will have ten minutes to vote by telephone for any country except their own, or rather the one from which their call originates. The ten countries qualifying to Saturday's final will be announced from about 2300 CEST.  The show is expected to end at 2340 CEST.
