Olivia Lewis has failed to qualify for the final of the 2007 Eurovision Song Contest. Singing
Vertigo by Gerard James Borg and Philip Vella she performed brilliantly giving every reason for Eurovision fans to vote for her. As things turned out, she did not garner enough votes to make it through the semifinal.
The ten countries voted into this year's Eurovision final are Belarus, FYR Macedonia, Slovenia, Hungary, Georgia, Latvia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Turkey, and Moldova.
Contestants from 28 countries took part in Thursday evening's semifinal, presented by Finnish national public broadcaster
YLE in collaboration with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). The show started at 21:00 CEST hosted by Jaana Pelkonen and Mikko Leppilamp in Finish, English and French. Maltese television viewers heard a Maltese commentary by TVM newscaster Antonia Micallef. Olivia Lewis appeared on stage at 22:25 CEST.
The 15-minute televoting round was officially opened at 23:00 CEST by the show hosts. Voting took place from all 42 participating countries telephone or SMS. The specific phone and SMS
numbers for each country appeared on television screens in all participating Eurovision countries. Votes were counted by Digame, a digital gaming company which runs the major
interactive applications in the German television market.
10 envelopes with the country names of the qualifying songs were opened randomly placing each act in the running order for Saturday's final along the other 14 prequalified entries.
The Maltese delegation appeared dismayed after the semifinal result was announced. Much soul searching will most certainly follow in the coming days.
Rehearsals for the final start at 13:00 CEST on Friday.
