On Wednesday evening, the Malta Song board announced the sixteen songs which made it through the Malta Song for Europe semi-final to be held on the 24th January 2008 at the Malta Fairs & Convention Centre, Ta' Qali.
The second pre-selection of the GO Malta Song for Europe was held on Wednesday afternoon. Each song was performed in front of an international jury board.
The sixteen semi-finalists in the order of their performance on the night are:
1. Loved by you – Pamela & Glen
2. Caravaggio - Claudia Faniello
3. Give me a chance - Eleanor Cassar
4. My last encore - Mary Spiteri
5. Casanova - Morena
6. Thrown your stones - Daniela Vella
7. Love is just the way - Rosman Pace
8. Go - Klinsmann Coleiro
9. Vodka - Morena
10. Whispers - Pamela
11. Superhero - Klinsmann Coleir
12. Contardiction - Jean Claude Vancell
13. All right - Chris & Moira
14. Tangled - Jessica Muscat
15. If you believe - Mary Spiteri
16. Street car of desire - Petra Zammit
17. Sunrise - Claudia Faniello
Following the annoucement of the semi-finalists, MaltaMedia's Creative Director Toni Sant said, "I haven't heard any of the songs yet. Looking at names on the list for the semifinal round I can say that it's an interesting mix, especially with Mary Spiteri and Chris & Moira returning to the fray. I wonder who will sing Mary's other song since she obviously will have to give one up".
On the other hand, MaltaMedia's Creative Director expressed his disappointment that the selection does not include Jo Zette. "The presence of such an act would have brought some much needed updating to the Malta Song Contest, bringing it in line with what the Eurovision Song Contest offers its hard core fans across Europe. I actually heard Catwalk, the song Jo Zette was singing, and I believe that it was probably not the best song for this performer. Still, I'm bitterly disappointed that the show will be missing what could have been the dawn of a new era for Malta's possible entries to the Eurovision Song Contest."
Only eight songs will form the line-up on the final night on the 26th January. Voting during the final night will be a mix of jury and public voting. The jury will have 20% of the vote while the public, through televoting, will make up the remaining 80%.
There will be a 30-minute voting window on the night and the public will be able to vote up to 2 times from fixed lines, mobile telephones and via text messaging.
The festival will be the production of the Maltasong Board and Peter Busuttil will be executive producer. Local artists will provide the entertainment on the semi final and final nights and the hosts for this year’s national Song for Europe are John Demanuele accompanied by Ruth Casingena and Chiara. Both nights will be televised live on TVM.
The prices of the tickets for the semi final are at Lm10.00 (23 Euros) and Lm 12.00 (28 Euros) while for the final night, tickets will be sold at the same price with the addition of a limited number of VIP tickets at Lm 15.00 (35 Euros). There will be 1000 seats available.
