Preparations are in full swing for the 2008 Malta Song for Europe (MSFE) semi-final on Thursday. The singers of the 17 songs in the semi-final are currently performing their songs on various TV stations in an attempt to lure the audience to cast their vote in their favour, if they make it to the final on Saturday. YouTube videos of all songs from the various TV performances are available via EurovisionMalta.com.
During the semi-finals, a jury panel of international judges will choose the songs to proceed to the finals on Saturday. The MSFE 2008 winner will then be chosen by 80% televoting and 20% from the international jury panel.
Rehearsals commence at the Malta Fairs and Convention Centre (MFCC) in Ta’Qali on Monday.
Speaking to MaltaMedia News about the availablity of all the partipating songs via YouTube, MaltaMedia’s creative director Toni Sant said that "it is remarkable that this year, for the first time ever, anyone can watch and hear the songs as many times as they like ahead of the official festival nights. I'm fascinated by the fact that most of the video clips come from TV channels other than TVM, which is the official presenter of Malta's entry to the Eurvision Song Contest, even if that responsibilty has been delegated to the MaltaSong Board. This goes to show how significant this contest is for the local mediascape."
This year’s edition of the Malta Song for Europe has already been met by controversies. The most recent developed on Thursday, when MaltaSong Board chairman Robert Abela reacted to what were termed as "serious allegations" made in public by Ms Grace Borg, former chairperson of the MaltaSong Board. Addressing a meeting called by AKAM, the Association for Maltese Singers, Authors and Composers, which she heads, she claimed impropriety in the selection process for towards semi-final.
Ms Borg has called for the publication of the votes obtained up to the second phase selection. In a statement, the Board said that this had never been the practice, “for the simple and obvious reason that it would not be prudent to do so since it could otherwise influence public perception and, consequently, the final televoting process.” The board added that during Ms Borg’s tenure, she had followed the same procedure with individual singers knowing the votes they obtained once the festival is over.
The Board stated that it deemed these allegations serious enough to warrant criminal prosecution, if founded. It will therefore be calling upon Ms Borg to provide details to the police as the Malta Song Board chairman will in fact ask the Commissioner of Police to initiate an investigation into Ms Borg's allegations.
The semi-finalists in their order of appearance on Thursday are:
