Morena for Malta at Eurovision Song Contest 2008

morenaThe song Vodka sung by Morena has been proclaimed winner of the 2008 Malta Song For Europe (MSFE). Chosen by 80 per cent televoting and 20 per cent by a panel of  judges, Morena will be Malta’s representative at the 53rd edition of the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) to be held this May in Belgrade, Serbia.

Penned by lyricist Gerard James Borg and composer Philip Vella, singer Morena's performance of Vodka beat tough competition from the other seven contestants by garnering a total of 16,979 votes from the pubic and 78 votes from the judges. Claudia Faniello placed second with 12,714 public votes and68 from the judges for Carvaggio by Ray Aguis and Godwin Sant,  and third singing Ray Agius' Sunrise earning 4,518 public votes and 64 from the judges.

The other finalists were Give me a chance by Eleanor Cassar, (music Paul Giordimaina; lyrics Fleur Balzan); Casanova by Morena, (music Philip Vella; lyrics Gerard James Borg); Love is just the way by Rosman Pace, (music and lyrcs Rosman Pace); Go - Klinsmann Coleiro, (music Dominic Galea; lyrics Claudette Pace); Street car of desire by Petra Zammit, (music Elton Zarb; lyrics Rita Pace)

Televoting and SMS lines were opened by presenters Ruth Casingena, John Demanuele and Chiara at approximately 2115 CET and remained active for 30 minutes, giving ample time for viewers to vote comfortably. The final result was announced at around 2322 CET.

Entertainers during the TVM-televised night at the Malta Convention Centre in Ta’ Qali included former winners Mike Spiteri and Olivia Lewis.

Natalie Gauci, the 26-year-old singer of Maltese descent and winner of the Australian Idol contest last year was a special guest singer performing a duet with Chiara on Malta's highest ever Eurovision placement, Angel. Gauci’s own debut single Here I am made it to second place in the Australian singles chart after just three days. Her first album on the  Sony label, Natalie Gauci: The Winner’s Journey was released on 8 December 2007.
