The weekly podcast series Mużika Mod Ieħor (MMI) by Toni Sant marks its 100th edition this week.

Commenting about the milestone on his blog, MaltaMedia Online Network's founding creative director said that "it's really just another one in the series but because 100 has special significance in metric counting a celebration of one sort or other is in order."

Through the MaltaMedia Online Network, Toni Sant has been exploring the possibilities of webcasting since 1998. His personal highlight in all the webcasting with MaltaMedia is undoubtedly the audio reports he recorded in response to the 9/11 attacks in 2001. Those webcasts appeared again in September 2005 as MaltaMedia's first podcasting series, which was the world's first series of podcasts in the Maltese language. Mużika Mod Ieħor started soon after that with the first podcast appearing on Saturday 13 November 2005.

A few weeks ago, podcast listeners picked their top Maltese music releases for 2007. Toni Sant's MMI 2007 Listeners' Picks poll opened for votes in mid-December through an exclusive application developed by James Attard for Facebook. Scream Daisy won two of the five categories. The 2007 Listener’s Pick were 2007 Top Album: Scream Daisy - Scream Daisy; 2007 Top Single/EP: Xtruppaw - Forza Malta (B'Għajta Waħda); The Rifffs - Jack the Ripper; 2007 Top Internet Release: The Characters - One In A Million; Dean Saviour - Marshmallow Girl; 2007 Top Online Video: Scream Daisy – Pretty; 2007 Top Overseas-based Release: Mathematikal – Electrophant.

The total number of titles nominated this year was 112, with 26 albums, 22 online releases, 19 overseas-based, 13 videos, and 32 singles/EPs. Nominations were gathered between September 14 and November 26, based mostly on tracks played on Toni Sant's weekly podcasts.

Toni Sant said he made sure that the tracks selected for this week's podcast were all special for one reason or another. The 100th podcast opens with a brand new recording from Fakawi, one of Malta's most entertaining bands. They have just released their Smart Song, which is a send-up of all the buzz surrounding the launch of Malta's Smart City.

A rare recording by the late 1980s band The Ophidian Twin is also featured in this podcast. This band was among those that appeared on Mill-Garaxx, the TV series produced and presented by the podcaster himself way back in 1989, under the direction of Mario Ellul. Cameron's Closet is one of two songs The Ophidian Twin played live in the main TVM studio at that time. Next comes the track Interludju from Danijeli’s 2007 album Kakofonija followed by Filfla from the CD Temples of Devotion by Australian band Skorba.

The special MMI podcast was completed from Is-CD tal-iXtruppaw. L-Għanja tal-iXtruppaw closed the 100th podcast with music from the same band that opened the very first podcast in the series. Interestingly, this recording had not been made when the weekly Mużika Mod Ieħor podcast first appeared.

Toni Sant is very up-beat about the next 100 podcasts, remarking that at an almost weekly rate it should take just over two more years to get to the 200th podcast in the series. If all goes well, the 200th edition of Mużika Mod Ieħor should appear sometime in the spring of 2010. He is really excited about all the new music and other rare recordings to be discovering together between now and then on this series.

A podcast is a series of digital media files distributed over the Internet.  Like radio, the term can refer either to the content itself or to the method by which it is syndicated; the latter is also termed podcasting. Though podcasters' web sites may also offer direct download or streaming of their content, a podcast is distinguished from other digital media formats by its ability to be syndicated, subscribed to, and downloaded automatically when new content is added, using an aggregator or feed reader capable of reading feed formats such as RSS or Atom.
