The
Gozo Sports Complex, together with the Gozo Spirit Combat Int. Association,
organized the second edition of the Gozo Martial Arts festival on Sunday, 27th
April 2008. Four clubs took part in this event, namely
the Gozo Spirit Combat Club, the TAO Spirit Combat Club, the Zanshin Spirit
Combat Club and the ATMA Spirit Combat Club.
The
competitions were refereed by Master Mario Saliba and the judging panel was
composed of Master Gerard Vassallo, Sensei Charles Mizzi and Sensei Paul
Caruana. The tournament included four
types of competitions namely viking combat, back to back ground wrestling,
free-style free-hand kata and free-style weapon kata. All competitions were categorized in juniors
and seniors sections. Over thirty-five
competitors participated in this event.
All students exhibited excellent techniques in the various
competitions. The GSCA Martial Artist of
the Year 2008 was awarded to the young Marie Therese Camilleri.
This
activity was backed by a Kick Boxing session lead by Kancho Adrian Axisa held
on Saturday. The Gozo Kick Boxing Club
and the Ying Yang Kick Boxing Club took part in this event.
The
Gozo Sports Complex, through the Directorate Customer Services, Ministry for
Gozo, continually strives to achieve the highest standards where sport
activities and quality opportunities in Gozo are concerned. The Martial Arts
festival is definitely an annual appointment in the Gozo sports calendar.
