A new advisory board for the local preparations of the Eurovision Song Contest 2009 has just been appointed by the Public Broadcasting Services. This is however merely a team of advisors of varied competencies and not an organisational board.
This new team consisting of Isabelle Gatt, Martin Gauci, Deo Grech and Frederick Zammit is also new in that it brings together people who, with some negligible exceptions, have followed the Eurovision Song Contest and contributed to it on a local level consistently.
Gatt comes with a background in the performing arts, both as a practitioner and as a lecturer, Gauci is an Executive Officer Malta Council for Culture and the Arts, Grech is the president of ogae malta - the official Eurovision Song Contest fan club, whilst Zammit has for a number of years been the brains behind the “Festival Kanzunetta Indipendenza” as well as being a Eurovision Song Contest observer.
MaltaMedia Artistic Director and Eurovision Observer, Dr Toni Sant said, “ It's good to see that PBS has appointed a team of advisors who can offer a substantial amount of collective experience towards Malta's Eurovision entries. This is an excellent first step towards moving away from the previous structure, which failed to deliver satisfactory results in recent years. However, there's still much to be seen in terms of the radical changes that are really needed to justify the huge effort and attention given to Maltese Eurovision songs.”
Following Malta’s failure to qualify for this year’s Eurovision finals, the MaltaSong board was removed and responsibility of Malta’s participation in the popular contest was passed on to PBS.
