Weather disrupts early Gozo carnival plans

The defile with floats that were to mark the grand opening of the carnival festivities in the Gozo’s capital city square were postponed until Thursday 15th February due to bad weather conditions. On Friday evening, the floats’ defile was to be followed by participating dance groups and dancing competitions in Independence Square Enclosure in Victoria from 18:00CET onwards.

 

From an official notice issued by the Ministry for Gozo it is not clear if Saturday's programme will be held as scheduled. Given that Saturday's weather forecast is similar to today's, it's likely that the events will be postponed too.

 

On Saturday, when the Maltese Islands will be celebrating the Shipwreck of St. Paul, the carnival spectacle is scheduled to start at 18:00CET in 8th Sept. Avenue continuing in Victory Square in Xaghra. On Sunday 11th February, an International Carnival Show will be held in St Peter and St Paul Square in Nadur from 12:30CET onwards.

 

On Friday, the Gozo Sports Complex in Victoria will be hosting the Children’s Carnival with the participation of Gozitan school groups starting at 10:00CET. In Nadur a spontaneous Carnival is held from 21:30CET onwards along with spontaneous carnival revelry in several Gozitan villages throughout the whole evening.

 

On Saturday 17th February, the carnival festivities will be in full swing in Victoria, Xewkija, Qala, St Lawrence and Nadur. A defile’ followed by dance spectacle with participation of school groups will be held in Independence Square , Victoria , at 10:00CET while celebrations continue in the evening in the other localities.

 

From Republic Street to Independence Square in Victoria will come alive once more on Sunday 17th of February with a defile’ followed by Carnival Programme with the participation of school dance groups at 10:00CET. The defile’ will see the participation of all competing dance groups and floats followed by dancing competitions in enclosure at 16:00CET. A spontaneous Carnival will be held in Nadur from 20:00CET onwards during the four days.

 

Qala and Gharb will be hosting carnival festivities with music and dance competitions on Monday at 19:00CET.

 

On Tuesday 20th February Carnival Defile’ and Gran Finale’ with all participants followed by dancing competitions in Independence Square , Victoria in enclosure from 18:00CET onwards.
