A little more than a year after his first solo art exhibition, Joseph Cilia is once again taking the initiative of presenting some of his works to the general public, with the difference that now he is being joined by long-time friend Ilona Attard. Together, joseph and Ilona, both 21, share their artistic talent with the rest of the world, which, although particular pleasing to them, is the result of much painstaking work and sacrifice. It is against this backdrop that the name "L-Gharaq ta' Gbini" (The Sweat of my Brow) was conceived for this exhibition.

Whilst his first exhibition revolved around his personal dreams, desires and beliefs, this time around Joseph, a University Psychology and Sociology student, makes an appreciation of all that is Maltese out of his work. Hence we find representations with much folkloristic elements as well as scenes that bring to the fore Maltese life in its uniqueness and simplicity, this being an attempt to counter the effects of time, that is rendering it a bleak memory, as opposed to Joseph's effort to restore colour to it.

On the other hand, Ilona, who studies Psychology at University too, reflects on the body's ability to express itself through dance movement. This is reminiscent of Ilona's own character, who, along with painting, is a keen ballet dancer. Her works, therefore, combine her two passions into a single creation, each and every one of them being an extension of her deepest self.

This Exhibition that is being held in the General Headquarters of the Union Haddiema Maghqudin (UHM) Floriana, was opened yesterday 5th May by Hon. Clyde Puli, Parliamentary secretary for Youth, Culture and Sports, and is open daily between 9am and 4pm till the 14th of May. A part of the proceeds shall be donated to a local youth group that is organising a Summer-Camp for children from difficult backgrounds in the coming months.
