New report about Maltese telecoms

The international company Research and Markets has announced the addition of a new report called “Malta - Key Statistics, Telecom Market & Regulatory Overviews” to their offering.

The report says Malta has a small telecom market with mobile and broadband penetration below the EU average, though there has been strong recent growth in broadband take-up.

EU reports consumer problems in airline industry

The European Commission has published the mid term report on an EU wide enforcement investigation, involving 15 EU national authorities including Malta against misleading advertising and unfair practices on airline ticket selling websites.

The report shows that there are "serious and persistent consumer problems" throughout the airline industry as a whole. 1 in 3 websites surveyed have had to be followed up with enforcement action over the last 7 months for breaches of EU consumer law.

Mosta house raided by Drug Squad

The police arrested six men from Naxxar, Mosta and St Paul’s Bay including the owner of a house in Mosta that was raided by the Drug Squad on Sunday.

An undisclosed amount of heroin was discovered by the police in the residence.

Dr Lawrence Gonzi confirmed as PN leader

The PN general council that was convened Sunday Morning confirmed Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi as leader of the Nationalist Party and Tonio Borg as deputy leader.

In his speech, Dr Gonzi appealed to the opposition to cooperate with the government with a view to open a fresh chapter in the island's politics. He augured that under a new leader, the MLP will be more collaborative and less negative.

Somali genuinely believed drug was legal

Aweys Maani Khayre, 31, of Somalian nationality has been remanded in custody after he was apprehended on Saturday at the Malta International Airport where he was trying to smuggle 10 kilograms of khat leaves into Malta.

The man pleaded not guilty to charges of importation and possession of the drugs cathinone and cathine with the intent to traffic.

Mothers, mothering, motherhood honoured today

ST Microelectronics demands millions to stay

ST Microelectronics, which employs around 2,200 workers, is asking the government for “tens of millions of dollars” in financial support so that it can continue operating from Malta revealed Finance Minister Tonio Fenech in The Sunday Times.

The Sunday Times said the future of ST in Malta would greatly depend on the upcoming annual general meeting when the current management is either reconfirmed or changed.

Rare song birds seized from illegal trapper

A bird trapper in Malta has been caught red-handed illegally trapping three rare species of song bird, International Animal Rescue reported. He had been under observation by a group from the CABS camp (Committee Against Bird Slaughter) of which Max Farrugia of International Animal Rescue is a member.

The trapper was spotted in the south of the island from a distance of about 500 metres and, as soon as it was confirmed that illegal trapping was taking place, the observation team called the police. Eighteen birds were confiscated - four ortolan bunting, three red throated pipits and 11 short toed larks - as well as the trapping nets. The trapper will now face criminal charges and, as well as a heavy fine, he is likely to lose his trapping licence.

MLP reacts to State Opening of Parliament

The Malta Labour Party (MLP) said in a statement on Saturday afternoon that the government programme announced by Maltese President Dr Edward Fenech Adami at the State Opening of Parliament had a reconciliatory tone at times. However this had to be put in the context of what actually happened in the past few weeks.

In this distancing between nice words and facts, the MLP in Opposition will judge the Government by its actions and not relying on its words, the statement said.

Police detain 13 persons in all on drugs

A Somali man was arrested on Saturday at the Malta International Airport after around 10kg Khat drug was found in his luggage. The man was flying to Malta from London, the police said.

Also, 7 men and 3 women were arrested by the Police during the early hours of Saturday while another two men, aged 19 and 30, were arrested on Friday at Pieta also found in drug possession.

Shipyard's contracts being verified

The Ministry for Infrastructure, Transport and Communications said in a press release on Saturday that the Malta Shipyard's Fairmount contracts are being verified.

The statement comes in reply to the General Worker�s Union claims that the yards were about to lose �46.59 million over two years in a major ship conversion contract.

Parliament reconvenes on Saturday

The 11th parliament reconvened on Saturday. The Cabinet consists of 69 parliamentary seats in all, 35 on the side of the Nationalist Party and 34 in Opposition. The new legislature has a majority of just one seat.

Delegates against change in MLP leadership voting

Malta Labour Party (MLP) delegates have voted against a motion for the new MLP leader to be elected by all paid up party members and not just delegates. The decision was taken during an extraordinary general conference on Friday evening.

The motion, to amend the party statute, was moved by new Labour MP Marlene Pullicino. It was defeated with 165 votes in favour and 620 against, the latter being equivalent to 79 per cent of delegates' votes.There were seven invalid votes and one abstention.

Archbishop to visit Maltese in Luxemburg, Brussels
