New Board of Directors for Kunsill Malti għall-iSport

A new Board of Directors for Kunsill Malti ghall-iSport under the helm of Bernard Vassallo has been appointed for a period of one year.

Bernard Vassallo is the new chairman of the Kunsill Malti ghall-Isport - the Malta Sports Council. The other members in the board of directors, which are Mr Bertie Muscat as Deputy Chairman, Ms Vanessa Aquilina, Mr Louis Borg, Ms Margaret Mercieca, Ms Maria Mifsud Bonnici and Mr Kenneth Vella.

Bernard Vassallo holds a Bachelor of Honours in Business Management and Economics, Post Graduate Certificate in Education and Diploma in Computer Studies and works as a teacher at the Giovanni Curmi Higher Secondary. Vassallo is an international basketball referee. He controlled matches from the Commonwealth Games in Australia, Games of the Small States of Europe and the Promotion Cup. He also lectures in refereeing and was voted Official of the Year in 2006. He is also active in a number of other sports including waterpolo, swimming, handball, athletics and football.

Deputy Chariman Bertie Muscat served in the Maltese Olympic Commitee for 40 years and is a member of the Order of Merit thanks to his work and initiative in sports. For ten years, he was the secretary of the Executive Board which organises the Games of the Small States of Europe of which he was one of the founders.  He was also a member of the European Waterpolo Committee and a President of the Aquatic Sport Association for 19 years. Muscat is also an honorary member of the international swimming federation - LEN. 

Vanessa Aquilina holds a degree in Accountancy and Management and a degree with honours in Accountancy. Aquilina is a principal in a private school and served as auditor with a private firm.

Louis Borg is a lecturer in sport within the University of Malta. He is the founder of the Malta Basketball Association and the Malta Handball Association. Borg is currently Vice-President of the FISEC International and Vice-President of FISEC Malta. 

Margaret Mercieca holds a diploma in Social Studies and works as a manager. She is an official of a female handball club and is the team manager of the women's national handball team.

Maria Mifsud Bonnici holds Masters of Science in Sports Science and works as Senior Scientific Officer in the Environmental Health Department. She is a former triathlon national champion and winner of the Sportwoman of the Year award in 2002. Mifsud Bonnici represented Malta in various triathlon events abroad.

Kenneth Vella is an assistant head the De La Salle College. He holds a degree in education, Post Graduate Diploma in Administration and Management in Education and is reading a Masters degree in Leadership in Education. Vella is also a sports journalist and won the last two editions of the Broadcasting Authority awards for sports programmes. He is also the general secretary of the Malta Racing Club, Malta delegate in the Union Europeenne Du Trot, PRO of the Regatta commission, gerneral secretary of Special Olympics Malta and Media Officer of FISEC Malta.  

Also on the board of directors are Mr Joe Cassar - nominated by the Maltese Olympic Committee and Mr Andrew Decelis - nominated by associations of non-Olympic Sport.
