The Cricket touring season recommenced this past week with the local Marsa
C.C taking on returning Stockport Grammar School who were on their eighth
tour to Malta.
On Wednesday Stockport won the toss and elected to bat. Tom Isherwood and
Oliver Hemlin scoring 109 and 100 not out respectively. Two great batting
displays which took the visitors to an outstanding score of 270 from their
forty overs. For Marsa Kevin Krishna and Tim Wheeler were the only wicket
takers with one a piece. The home teams reply was disappointing with only
Steve Johnson (thirty six runs) and Malcolm Crab (twenty three runs) making
over twenty runs. The home team was bowled out for 139 runs. The pick of the
Stockport bowlers was Azeem Shahid with four wickets while E. Martin and
Rory Bell took two wickets each. Stockport goes one up in the series.
On Thursday Marsa won the toss and elected to field. Again the visitors
found a centurion in Dan Bailey who played a very patient innings. Oliver
Hemlin scored sixty nine runs which helped the visitors to a score of 252
runs from their overs. For Marsa Mike Caruana took two wickets and Martin
Llewlyn took one. In reply the Marsa batsmen put in a better effort with
Mike Caruana scoring thirty nine runs, John Grima scoring thirty seven runs,
Alan Kyle scoring thirty four runs and Nowell Khosla twenty eight runs. The
home side managed to bat the full forty overs and Marilyn Camilleri scored
her first run against a touring team. For the tourists Matt Spencer, Rory
Bell and Azeem Shahid all took two wickets each. Stockport goes two up in
the series.
On Saturday Stockport won the toss and elected to bat. This time the Marsa
bowlers had the visitors in trouble having them five wickets down for forty
nine runs at one stage. The visitors kept their nerve and with good batting
from the lower order batsmen, M.Lister twenty five runs, R.Griffiths thirty
eight runs and Tom Isherwood fifty seven runs took the team tally to 221
runs all out. For Marsa Sam Dhandapani took three wickets and Andy Lenard
and Ronnie Sacco took two wickets each. The Marsa team had a horrible start
losing three wickets for twenty eight runs. In went Javed Shah who blasted a
quick thirty runs including four fours and six before being caught. Tim
Edwards put in a good batting display making twenty runs. For Marsa Ronnie
Sacco played one of the best innings for the home side this year. He scored
seventy six runs in a gallant effort to win the game. Unfortunately he was
run out and the home team lost by eight runs. For Stockport J.Cheyne was the
pick of the
bowlers taking four wickets. Stockport win their fourth series in a row.
Marsa's last series win over Stockport was in 2004 where the result was two
to one.
Next week Marsa C.C take on new side Skegness Grammar School on Wednesday
and on Saturday. Both games start at 10.30 CET.
