William Chetcuti finished eighth in the Double Trap event in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Four years ago, in Athens, Chetcuti had placed ninth.
At the Beijing Shooting Range, after hitting 47 in the first round, he hit 45 in the second and 44 in the third for a total of 136. This total put Chetcuti in joint-sixth place together with Australia's Mark Russell, UAE's Ahmed Almaktoum and Hungary's Roland Gerebics.
A shoot-off was therefore necessary with Russell finishing ahead of Almaktoum, Chetcuti and Gerebics.
Meanwhile in judo, in the -63kg category, Marcon Bezzina lost to Kahina Saidi of Algeria.
