Maltese swimmer Ryan Gambin established a national record in the 100m butterfly after placing sixth in heat 4 in 53.70 seconds in the Beijing Olympic Games on Thursday.

Overall he placed 48th out of a total of 65 swimmers in the event.

The previous record was also held by Gambin.
