There was heartbreak for the #38 Baia High Performance team and
huge joy for the #44 Conam Yachts outfit in the aftermath of today's
Vigo Grand Prix of the Sea Sprint race, as a six-minute penalty for exceeding
the 85mph average speed limit denied the OSG Racing-run outfit their first win
of the year.
The #38 Baia High Performance team had briefly been the only team
to have beaten the defending champion #44 Conam Yachts outfit on the
water this year, but 12 timing infringements over the duration of the race
netted them a six-minute penalty that puts #44 Conam Yachts on the top
step and knocked #38 Baia High Performance down to fifth place in the
race results.
The #22 Big Sergio outfit is now second in the race results, while
the #26 Team Konrad Wild Card entry secures the final podium spot as
part of an impressive debut outing.
That change in result puts the #44 Conam Yachts team within 10 points
of defending their 2007 SuperSport title in 2008. A points finish in Sunday's
Endurance race for the #44 Conam Yachts team will put this year's
championship crown beyond the reach of the #07 Microlink PC and #38
Baia High Performance teams.
Commenting on www.chaudronpowerboats.com after the announcement of the
official result the Maltese pilot Aaron Ciantar said "We had a bad
start having to race for the first laps behind two boats. We gradually managed
to get on to second place behind the Italian duo Stefano Acanfora, and Renato
Guidi of #38 Baia High Performance team . I had the feeling
that they were exceeding the average speed and so decided to stay behind them
limiting ourselves to our standard 85mph" remarked Ciantar.
"If Angelo and had decided to try and overtake Big Sergio we
would have risked over speeding ourselves so we decide to play it safe and finishing
in second place" continued to explain Ciantar. "Immediately
after we got off the boat we headed towards the judges stand to verify the
result and they immediately stated that they were investigating a
possible exceeding of average speed by the #38 Baia High
Performance. As soon as this was officially confirmed we were declared as
winners of today's race. I do really hope we win also tomorrow so we will be
mathematically crowned again World Champions" concluded the Maltese P1
Pilot.
