The Volleyball 2008 Men Junior European
Championships for Small Countries came to an end last Sunday with Luxembourg emerging as winners of this competition. Cyprus
and San Marino finished in second and third place respectively. The event was
organised by the Malta Volleyball Association with the CEV monitoring the whole
event.
On Friday, Mr. Justice Lino Farrugia Sacco,
president of the Malta Olympic Committee gave a short speech to mark the
opening of the games. Malta lost the four matches but showed promising qualities especially
when playing against Northern
Ireland. This was
the first international commitment the national under 20 squad had and it will
surely help in experience in future commitments.
The three day tournament came to an end
with Luxembourg captain being presented the winners cup by the Hon. Clyde Puli,
Parliamentary Secretary for Youths and Sport. In a short speech, MVA president
Mr. Branko Vlahovic thanked the parliamentary secretary for attending the event
whilst the head of the Luxembourg delegation praised the excellent tournament organisation and spoke
positively about their stay in Malta.
The Malta Volleyball Association will be
organising a further two tournaments. In May, the senior ladies will meet the
national teams of Cyprus, San Marino and Iceland and in June, the men’s senior team will face Cyprus, Iceland
and Scotland.
