MOC names athletes for Beijing Olympics

Malta will be represented by six athletes in the Beijing Olympic Games which will be held between August 8 and 24. These athletes will be representing Malta in four disciplines: Athletics, Judo, Shooting and Swimming.

The six athletes are Charlene Attard and Nicolai Portelli - Athletics; Marcon Bezzina - Judo; William Chetcuti - Shooting; Ryan Gambin and Madeleine Scerri - Swimming. Marcon Bezzina will be the flag bearer during the opening ceremony. Julian Pace Bonello will be the Chef-de-Mission.

For William Camenzuli and Marcon Bezzina, this will be their second experience in the Olympic Games after participating in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.  

Ryan Gambin was the first Maltese swimmer to qualify for the Olympic Games with a 54.33secs in the 100m butterfly. He represented Malta in the European Swimming Championships. On the other hand, Australia-based Madeleine Scerri had represented Malta in the Monaco 2007 GSSE winning three bronze medals.  

Charlene Attard is the first Maltese woman to run under 12 seconds in the 100m while Nicolai Portelli is the top runner in the 400m
