MaltaMedia Online News has won the Maltese language award and has placed second in the e-journalism category of the Malta Journalism Awards announced by the Malta Institute of Journalists. The final ceremony was held on Wednesday night with Pierre J. Mejlak receiving the award for his blog on the Malta Media Online Network.
Mejlak’s success represents the fifth award in e-journalism given as part of the Malta Journalism Awards.
In the previous four years MaltaMedia Online News won first place in the e-journalism category of the Awards three times. Last year Malta Media Online News won the award with Wired Malta, a blog by Robert Micallef. Previous winners were Martin Debattista, Chief Executive Officer of MaltaMedia news who won in 2003 and Pierre J Mejlak who also won in 2005.
The Gold Award, which is awarded to a person deemed to have gone beyond the requirements of normal journalistic practice during his or her career, was given to Mr Lino Cassar. The Jury of the Gold Award was made up of Dr Roger Degiorgio, Frans Ghirxi and President Emeritus Guido de Marco as Chairman. The Award was presented President Emeritus Ugo Mifsud Bonnici. Previous winners were Fr Joe Borg (1998), Anton Cassar (1999), Frank Attard (2000), J.G. Vassallo (2001), Anthony Montanaro (2002), John Manduca (2003), Charles Grech Orr (2004), Pawlu Carachi (2005) and Paul Saliba (2006).
This year’s independent jury for the awards was constituted by Ranier Fsadni, Michael Schiavone and Anton Cassar as Chairman. The full list of winners were the following:
