SmartCity Malta, in conjunction with the Directorate for Quality and Standards in Education and the Directorate for Educational Services, kicked off a series of information sessions for academics and education personnel at Robert Samut Hall in Floriana, Malta.
The aim of the information sessions is to brief all state and non-state schools, Directors, College Principals, Heads of School, Assistant Directors, Education Officers, Guidance Teachers and ICT Teachers about the future opportunities, particularly in terms of ICT and media employment, that SmartCity Malta will create.
SmartCity Malta is a joint venture between SmartCity and the Government of Malta with the aim to be recognised as the predominant ICT and media business park provider in the Mediterranean region while supporting the growth of the knowledge-based industry.
“This is a great opportunity for academics and education personnel to learn more about SmartCity Malta and the formidable challenge that the Maltese education system has to tackle in developing a sufficiently large talent pool of ICT and media professionals, and technicians, to fill the new positions that will be created by SmartCity Malta,” said Dr. Grace Grima, Director General at the Directorate for Quality and Standards in Education.
“The Directorate for Educational Services (DES) welcomes SmartCity Malta’s initiative and commits itself to collaborating in this new and exciting challenge. The DES is constantly aware of developing trends in the labour market and is keen to learn more about this new venture. SmartCity Malta will have its effect on the nation including the teaching profession and therefore we look forward to building our knowledge of the sector,” said Ms Micheline Sciberras, Director General, Educational Services.
During the series of information sessions extended over several months, SmartCity Malta seeks to provide all necessary information, for both educators and parents, to familiarise themselves with the opportunities that will arise in a short span of years as SmartCity Malta develops. The information sessions encourage dialogues responding to questions on the ICT and media opportunities at SmartCity Malta and in turn, allow educators and parents to be in a better position to guide and encourage Maltese students to grasp the opportunities that will be created by SmartCity Malta.
Mr Fareed Abdulrahman, CEO of SmartCity and acting CEO of SmartCity Malta and SmartCity Kochi said, “SmartCity Malta will create many opportunities for Maltese citizens to either start-up a business at SmartCity Malta – through its one-stop-shop experience aiming to ease the process of setting up and a hassle-free operation – or seek employment in the ICT and media fields which will contribute to the growth of the Maltese knowledge-based economy.”
SmartCity Malta will be part of a ‘global network’ of SmartCity entities that will allow businesses to easily expand globally through the SmartCity network. The SmartCity global network will also allow easy access to different markets, talent pools, possibilities of business partnerships and sharing of market intelligence.
The way the SmartCity concept is structured also facilitates ICT and media employees to develop competencies in niche sectors. Undoubtedly all this leads to better employment and a better quality of life.
SmartCity Malta will also offer jobs in other amenities that are required to fulfil the SmartCity lifestyle. These will include retail and recreational facilities, hotels, residential complexes, health and fitness clubs, meeting and leisure areas, social and cultural events, clinics, schools, educational institutions and day-care centres.
More information sessions are planned for the coming months. For more information about the concept of SmartCity, one can log onto www.smartcity.ae.
