An innovative device on environmental sustainability has earned four students from the University of Malta a place to represent Malta in the intense worldwide competition of Microsoft’s Imagine Cup 2008, hailed as the World’s Premier Student Technology Competition.
Mark Cassar, Karl Cassar, Reuben Hayman and Mario Gauci designed and implemented an innovative GPRS-based car pooling system by using Microsoft’s platform and Microsoft tools based on this year’s Imagine Cup competition theme “Imagine a world where technology enables a sustainable environment”. Their project allows travelers to simply send a mobile phone message to a central server stating their location, their destination and the time of travel.
The system automatically sends the information to cars using the same route. Drivers who give lifts to other persons get awarded ‘carbon points’ which can be used to pay for fuel or utility costs. The result translates into less traffic congestion, less air pollution, more efficient use of fossil fuel, and a better environment.
“Every year the Microsoft Imagine Cup gives students in our ICT degree programmes the opportunity to express their creativity, to innovate, and also to compete with students from other universities all over the world. Our students have so far excelled in this competition. Last year, for example, the University of Malta team won an award and a three month internship at Microsoft Research in Bangalore, India,” said Dr John Abela, Senior Lecturer at the University of Malta.
Karl Davies Barrett, DPE LEAD for Microsoft Malta & Cyprus, said: “Through Imagine Cup, Microsoft Corporation encourages young people to apply their imagination, passion and creativity to technology innovations that can make a difference in the world today. Imagine Cup provides an opportunity for students around the world to explore new ways to use the power of software to help address some of the world’s toughest challenges.”
Now in its sixth year, Imagine Cup has grown to be a truly global competition focused on finding solutions to real-world issues. This year more than 200,000 students from over 100 countries and regions registered for the Imagine Cup 2008. Past winners have found the competition an effective springboard for future success.
Imagine Cup 2008 worldwide finals was held at the Musée du Louvre, Paris. More information is available online at http://www.imaginecup.com.
