HP and Microsoft sponsor new Technology Centre

The 9th Community Technology Learning Centre (CTLC) was officially opened on May 9th at Kalkara Local Council by the Minister of Infrastructure, Transport and Communications, Dr Austin Gatt.  

The new centre, which is sponsored by HP and Microsoft, will provide free ICT learning and tools for the community.

Microsoft invests to foster innovation

Microsoft’s Central and Eastern European (CEE) Vice-President Vahe Torossian on Tuesday addressed a group of top executives from private and government entities in Malta during a networking cocktail reception held at the Radisson SAS Bay Point Hotel in St Julians.

Vahe Torossian praised Malta and stated that the island contributes to CEE’s tremendous growth and optimism, to making it the fastest growing region in the world for Microsoft.

SmartCity: What’s in it for me?

SmartCity Malta is to become the “predominant ICT and media business park provider in the Mediterranean region” while assisting in the creation of knowledge based clusters within self-sustained townships Chris Cole, Chief Operating Officer of SmartCity Malta told Junior Chamber International (JCI) Malta during one of the organisation’s Boardroom Meeting sessions.

Mr Cole explained that SmartCity Malta will not only offer opportunities to ICT and media businesses, but also to other amenities that are required to fulfil the SmartCity lifestyle.

115 tonnes of TVs and monitors collected

More than 5,000 television sets and monitors, equivalent to 115 tonnes, have been collected by WasteServ Malta Ltd at the various Civic Amenity Sites, in just under eight months.  This waste would have previously gone to the Landfills but is now being collected for shipment abroad. Another 16,440 sets collected between 2004 and April 2007, and amounting to approximately 295 tonnes are stored in Qormi.

TVs and Monitors are collected through Civic Amenity Sites and are currently stored in in a warehouse in Marsa.

Malta’s telecom market below EU average

Research and Markets has announced the addition of “Malta - Key Statistics, Telecom Market & Regulatory Overviews” to their offering, BusinessWire.com reported.

The report says that Malta has a small telecom market with mobile and broadband penetration below the EU average, though there has been strong recent growth in broadband take-up.
